Creative Arts for Non-Creative Arts Therapists offers clinicians an introduction to the tools and principles creative arts therapists use in bringing music, drama, creative writing and visual arts into the consultation room. The course will emphasize the ability of creativity to act as a transitional object, a medium for processing trauma, a reset button in stuck treatment and a means to develop and strengthen the therapeutic relationship.

When the Therapist Is the Wrong Fit: Coming to Terms with Unsuccessful, Unsafe or Stuck Clinical Relationships will define proper and necessary conditions of emotional safety in clinical practice, emphasizing the importance of securing the therapist’s own needs and safety. The course will teach participants both how to self-analyze their own skill level in clinical practice and how to identify potentially dangerous blind spots in their patient relationships, such as ignoring psychosis, rescuing or overlooking one’s own limitations. Through the course, participants will be given practical steps to assure their own safety, including making use of their colleagues in both group and private practice.

The Pregnant Therapist

Course title:  “The Pregnant Therapist”

The Pregnant Therapist will explore the impact of pregnancy on the therapeutic relationship. The course will explore the transference that can arise when a therapist is pregnant and how the already present experience of the patients’ early childhood may be heightened. The course will examine ethics around pregnancy and maternity leave in both group and private practice. The course will also investigate the role that seen and unseen body transitions occurring during pregnancy might play in the therapeutic relationship and how to best address these changes within a clinical setting.

Course Title: “The Child in Family Therapy and the Family in Child Therapy: Integrating Family Work and Therapy with Children”

Course subject and brief description of course/educational activity content:

The Child in Family Therapy and the Family in Child Therapy: Integrating Family Work and Therapy with Children will address the weaknesses inherent in the traditional dichotomy between therapy with children and family therapy by establishing grounding for family and child co-treatment. The course will explore how to manage and navigate the ethics and confidentiality around family and child co-treatment, as well as teach participants how to maneuver the unique fluidity of co-therapy, which can require multiple therapeutic roles and a broadening of the understanding of the identified patient.
